Bali Wood Carving Sculpture Singles
Ubud - Bali... the call, the action and the love....
LEBO Studios opens new carving studio in Ubud Indonesia.
The Call: As a child I had the good fortune of growing up near our local library and it was there, in part, where my love for cartooning and the study of visual storytelling was born. In that library I was able to travel through time and space as each isle became a better friend and each book a porthole into new realities. One afternoon decades ago I remember finding an old National Geographic magazine with a feature about a small island in Indonesia called Ubud. There lived a community of world class sculptures that had woven the creation of art into the fabric of their reality. I felt that their journey of carving overlapped with my journey of cartooning and that afternoon I heard the call.
The Action: Fast forward 25 years and ten of thousands of hours spent in pursuit of wisdom through the art of cartooning. From plying my craft through murals, interior design and selling my paintings from the back of my car, I was able to get a foothold into a career in art representing myself and was able to eat while I developed within the craft. This lead to my partnership with Park West one of the largest art dealers in the world. Through touring the world doing private shows, I met Ketut, who was the main art handler and someone who I quickly became friends with. As it would happen he was from Ubud and was an expert carver. I told him of my interest in going there and possibly developing a relationship where we could collaborate and grow together. Soon Brenna, my fiance, and I took a trip to Southeast Asia.
The Love: Thanks to divine intervention the journey that started years ago came to light. Together with my friend Ketut, we were able to start a carving studio in Ubud Indonesia. Not only allowing me to realize the dream I had as a child to work alongside these world class sculptures but also provide them a fair wage to help them move forward in their pursuits. Sharing the blessings through the creative process, it doesn’t get better than that.
“I don’t want to be anyone’s boss,” Lebo says. “What I want to do is empower artisans to make a living doing what they know how to do. I want to help them support themselves.”
