Considered by many historians to be the very first US flag, the Grand Union flag was designed by George Washington for the Continental army and was first flown on January 1, 1776. Depicting the British king’s colors in the upper left with the 13 stripes representing the 13 united colonies completely engulfing the symbol of British oppression. George Washington stands as one of history’s most iconic heroes, reluctantly accepting the leadership of the Continental army and then as the first president of our beloved country.
